The Pfizer manufactured and FDA (Food and Dug Administration) approved erectile dysfunction drug Viagra which is primarily used as a cure for male impotency is now being proved to be a worthy cure of jet lag, a disorder that engulfs people when they move across different time zones and their circadian cycle is troubled. Once a person falls prey to jet lag, he becomes victim of concentration problems, sleepiness and insomnia and further it has become evident that jet lag proves particularly dangerous to shift workers or airline pilots.
Clinical experiment undertaken at the National University of Quilmes in Buenos Aires has found Viagra a useful treatment for jet lag in hamsters and just after Viagra proves successful in the animal species, lead investigator Diego Golombek is particularly hopeful that the drug would also emerge victorious as a treatment of jet lag in human beings.
In the experiment, researchers administered adult hamsters with a placebo or Viagra during the night and then disturbed their sleep patterns by waking them up six hours in advance with bright lights. As the experimentation by researchers at National University of Quilmes in Buenos Aires drew to a close, it was revealed that in comparison to placebo, the Viagra administered hamsters recuperated from their jet lag disorder 50% quickly in comparison to the ones taking placebo. Viagra effects on the hamsters suffering from jet lag were revealed instantly, the creatures starting to run on waking up without being affected by their sleep disturbance.
It became evident that the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra showed effective results only when the drug was applied in advance in the light-dark cycle comparable with an east-bound flight.
