In a study conducted in the United States, Viagra is found to increase the self-esteem of people suffering from anxiety and depression. It shows that the treatment of erectile dysfunction can be beneficial in boosting up self-esteem while relieving tension and anxiety.
Dr. Joseph C. Cappelleri, a scientist working with Pfizer, the manufacturer of Viagra, conducted the study, which was published in the Journal of Sexual Health. He distributed questionnaires on relationship and self-esteem to a select group of 93 people, who had taken Viagra as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. The questionnaires were targeted at both the periods, before and after the Viagra treatment. The same questionnaires were also administered to a control group of 94 people without sexual problems.
A clinical assessment of the responses showed that people who had sexual relationship problems were low on self-esteem and prone to anxiety, depression and similar disorders. But after10 weeks of treatment with Viagra, they displayed the same confidence level of the people in the control group. They were also able to ward off depression and anxiety efficiently.
Dr. Irwin Goldstein, the editor in chief of the journal, where the study was published, aptly coined Viagra as "life-quality drug" against its infamous "lifestyle drug" image.
