Recently, in the Greater Glasgow area, on account of mistakes committed by computer systems, people looking out for anti-smoking medicine were prescribed doses of Viagra.
A computer system that automatically functions by selecting a list of medicines for the buyer committed the mistake and as such when the physicians sought out the anti-smoking medication Zyban, the computers instead selected slidenafil, the generic of Viagra. The mistakes were found to have occurred in all the 900 GPs in the Greater Glasgow area.
Further inquiry into the incident revealed that the effect of the Viagra pills that accidentally landed upon the hands of the smokers were not known but it was made clear that only two GP practices complained of the trouble.
Relating to the unusual occurrence, the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board commented that the blunder might have occurred either due to the mistake committed by GPs or by pharmacy staff while signing prescriptions.
