Chemists in Mumbai city have started selling Viagra over the counter without any prescription from physicians. This has exposed the denizens of the city to the dangerous and harmful side effects of Viagra. It is reported that the retailers even goad the customers to buy the drug.
Even one month after the introduction of Viagra amidst much media hype and fanfare, chemists have seen no viable changes in the sales of the famed blue pill. Many chemists, who have stockpiled the expensive drug, have made little or no sales till date. Eventually they look for every possible ways to do away with this drug, inside or outside the law.
Only an urologist or an endocrinologist can give a prescription for Viagra. The prescription should have detailed information, mentioning the name and address of the patient along with a comprehensive medical history. But few doctors prescribe this drug as it has some side effects relating to heart problems and hypertensions.
Fearing a backlash from the consumer forums if any untoward incident happens after taking Viagra, many doctors don't prescribe this pill. And even if they do so, they skip their names and registration numbers. At this crucial juncture, the chemists have no other way but sell it over the counter, prescription or no prescription.
Dilip Mehta, president Pharmaceutical Wholesaler's Association, says the body has been strictly warning the retailers against such practices. But clearing stock remains the sole priority of most chemists. Even the FDA has threatened with dire consequences like suspension and cancellation of license, if they find any chemist flouting the rules. But it remains to be seen if the FDA will be successful in its endeavor.
