Pfizer recorded a high sale of Viagra (to the tune of 1.5 crore) in the Indian erectile dysfunction market, two months after its launch in December last year. Viagra's share in the 80 crore market has gradually moved up to 1.8%.
Market analysts say that even the local players in the erectile dysfunction market didn't have a smooth entry in the scene, as Viagra is doing now. Viagra is priced almost 20 times more than the other generic version of sildenafil in the Indian market. But according to the sales figure, price hasn't been a deterring factor for Viagra.
Pfizer is currently involved in innovative promotional works by working in tandem with doctors in 30 cities. With the quality tag attached to the brand drug Viagra, the upwardly mobile Indian has become mere putty in Pfizer's hand. Since its launch, Pfizer India has been able to trace more than 750 Viagra prescriptions, given out by doctors.
K.G.Ananthkrishnan, senior director of the pharmaceutical division Pfizer India, said in a press release that the high quality of research done by the company is responsible for the growth of Viagra sales. Pfizer is targeting a 10% share of the Indian erectile dysfunction market in the next two years.
