The erectile dysfunction drug Viagra and a wealth of other medicines mainly antibiotics and drugs to treat cancer and high cholesterol and condoms, smuggled from India to Europe , were seized by the European custom officials.
Laszlo Kovacs, the EU Taxation Commissioner elaborated on the seizure by mentioning that the trading of faker medicines and drugs has become a major threat with all the legitimate drug manufacturers worrying over the sudden increase in the prevalence of fake drugs. The latest European Customs Statistics released recently reveals that 148 operations were conducted last year and from those raids 560,598 packets of fake drugs were recovered. It became apparent that counterfeit drugs seized in 2005 doubled to the amount confiscated in 2004.
The released statistics further elaborated that across the whole Europe , 26,700 consignments of counterfeit and pirated goods were recovered and as such the number of seized items totaled to 75 million.
The European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries uttered a clarion call for tough action to counter drug piracy at both the European and the global level.
