In a trial conducted on 20 cyclists at a distance of 12,700 feet, it became evident that the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra significantly helped the participants in cycling with some responders showing improvement up to 45%.
As reported in the Journal of Applied Physiology published by The American Physiological Society, in the experiment from among the 20 cyclists ten were given Viagra while the remaining participants were administered with a placebo drug.
The cyclists were made to travel five kilometers which the Viagra administered athletes completed within 15% less time in comparison to the placebo administered athletes. It was also seen that the cyclists who had taken Viagra had considerable improvement in stroke volume (the volume of blood moved out of one ventricle of the heart per beat) and cardiac output (stroke volume times heart rate).
In comparison to the 45% improvement by responders, the non-responders were able to improve only a mere 1%.
