Researches have proved that Viagra can ease blood pressure in the lungs of people who are suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary diseases are considered to be the 4th reason of death in the United States, as per the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
COPD leads to breathing difficulty and smoking is considered as one of the prime cause for this disease. However, many other lung irritants may also cause COPD.
The COPD symptoms develop slowly over the years and main symptoms include, cough, sputum production, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness.
A study presented in Salt Lake City at Chest 2006, held by American College of Chest physicians refers to the effects of Viagra on pulmonary artery.
The study was conducted on 12 COPD patients, including those who had high blood pressure in the pulmonary artery that is responsible for bloodflow to the lungs. This condition is called pulmonary hypertension which is a common complication of COPD.
The researchers recorded the patient's pulmonary blood pressure before and after taking the Viagra pill. The patients were given a stationary bike to pedale for three minutes at a mild pace. Then their pulmonary artery blood pressure was recorded, which was higher at that time.
Then, in the next step, a Viagra dose was given to the patients and after 45 minutes, they repeated the exercise in the same pattern.
This time the result showed that the pulmonary artery blood pressure during exercise was lower.
The researchers concluded that some COPD patients may benefit from Viagra and Viagra like drugs which dilate blood vessels, to accomplish daily works involving a good amount of physical activities.
