An Australian man had been convicted on account of advertising the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra illegally all over the internet and is now about to be prosecuted. The accused had sent two billion spam advertisements from an Australian source and when the Australian Communications And Media Authority (ACMA ) came to know of the illegal activity, it raided his house.
On coming to know that the two billion spam addresses were sent from a source in Australia ; OPTA, a department that supervises matters relating to Dutch telecommunications tipped off the Australian authorities which further led to the arrest of the accused.
The list of criminal actions carried out through spam e-mails are immense with activities such as money laundering, illegal internet banking and fraud filling up the roster. Since the anti-spam laws became effective in 2004, it became a rule that the first time offenders had to pay a fine of $220,000 regularly whereas repeated offenders might have to shell out more than $1.1 million.
