The main ingredient of Viagra is sildenafil citrate, a chemical compound responsible for increasing the blood flow in the male genitals, thus, providing erections required for satisfactory sexual intercourse.

Viagra is widely popular for providing erections by dilating the blood vessels of the male sex organ and helping a man to achieve erection. Lately Viagra found a new use for itself-its use as a medicine for treating pulmonary hypertension.

The research undertaken by the Hopkins Medicine has proved that Viagra eases the stress on the heart induced by the stimulation of the stress hormone. Viagra has been proved to be a stress buster for the heart when the heart contracts. Due to the rush of the stress hormone like adrenalin, the heart contracts and then in that condition the heart has to put extra pressure in order to pump blood to all the parts of the body. This can happen either due to emotional stress or due to the stress caused by the physical exercise. Viagra diminishes the strengthened heart beat caused by the chemical induced stress and lessens the excess amount of blood and force that is required to pump the blood in the body.

The above research findings were the first ever clear evidence that Viagra or sildenafil citrate has a direct beneficial impact in this condition. In the previous research the test was done on the mice and it was found that sildenafil citrate or Viagra aided in blocking the short term effects of the hormonal stress in the heart. The related studies also showed that Viagra also provides help for the long term effects of blood pressure on human heart.

Sildenafil citrate or Viagra influences the heart only when it is under stressful condition. In normal situation Viagra does not have any impact on the heart. According to the study 35 healthy men and women of an average age of 30 were given an injection of dobutamine twice in the timeframe of three hours. Dobutamine is a synthetic adrenaline like chemical that speeds up the heart rate and the pumping strength. Results showed that each dobutamine injection stimulated heart function, increasing heart rate and the force of each heartbeat used to pump blood throughout the body.  After the first injection of dobutamine it was observed that the heart contractions increased by 150 percent for both the groups-first, the group that was treated with Viagra and the second group that was on placebo. In the group treated by Viagra the heart contractions decreased by at least 50% where as the group on the placebo did not show any change.
