A study conducted in the University of Vermont College of Medicine has shown that Viagra may be helpful to both the mother and the fetus during hypertensive pregnancy. Viagra can immensely help in improving the vascular function of the mother, increasing the weight of the offspring and cutting down on the rate of mortality without having any significant effect on the blood pressure level of the mother.

George Osol assisted by his colleagues Gerard Celia and Natalia I. Gokina, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Vermont College of Medicine conducted the research on pregnant rats. Pregnant rats induced with hypertension were given Viagra to see the effect of Sildenafil on hypertensive pregnancy.

Osol came up with the following results after the test:

1) Viagra helped in the growth of the uterus of the hypertensive rats, as it should in the case of a normal pregnancy. Generally the contractility and the growth of the blood vessels in the uterus is reduced in the case of a hypertensive pregnancy. The size of the arteries in the rats with Viagra was found to be different from normal, but larger than the ones with hypertension. It showed that Viagra helped in increasing blood flow in the uterus and placebo.

2) The weight of the fetus was increased to normal in the hypertensive rats that were given Viagra while the weight of the offspring reduced by around twenty percent in the hypertensive rats that were not given Viagra. Viagra can thus help in fighting the serious condition during pregnancy, where the weight of the fetus reduces due to restricted blood flow.

3) Viagra also helped in minimizing the mortality rate of the fetus. The study showed that there was no single case of fetal mortality among the hypertensive rats that took Viagra. But six of the fifty-two fetuses among the hypertensive rats that didn't take Viagra were lost in the process, strengthening the case of Viagra as a possible cure for hypertensive pregnancy.

The study is a landmark in the field of hypertensive pregnancy and Preeclampsia. It shows that Viagra has a positive effect on the uteroplacental circulation of a pregnant mother that will help in preventing the complexities of antihypertensive therapy, especially the reduction of uteroplacental blood flow.

Riding on the encouraging results of the study, the medical scientists are trying to focus more on the positive effects of Viagra in the uterine blood flow of hypertensive mothers and the other complementary roles it play in the growth and development of the fetus. Osol said that Viagra might be the answer to Preeclampsia in the near future.
